Avoid “Social Hosting”-Prevent Underage Drinking

With Prom and Graduations coming up, there are will be no shortage of celebrations with family and friends.  The Alliance for Substance Use Prevention of Langlade County would like to remind families that providing alcohol to your student’s underage friends unsafe and illegal. By decreasing access and talking about alcohol use, we can support efforts to help change behaviors and attitudes about underage drinking.

According to the lasted Youth Risk Behavior Survey released in 2021, 59% of Antigo High School students surveyed stated they have had at least one alcoholic drink and 33% in the last 30 days.  37% of students who currently drink alcohol had their first drink before age 13.  Most report getting alcohol from home, a friend or relatives’ home.

 Tips to prevent underage drinking:

  • If you are hosting a gathering, be present and check in with your kids during the party.

  • Talk to your kids about the dangers of underage drinking and discuss your expectations.

  • Be a good role model and drink in moderation.

  • Secure and monitor the alcohol in your home.  Notice when alcohol is missing or

  • watered down.

  • Talk to other parents about the importance of youth not drinking alcohol.
